Hey there, flower enthusiasts and adventure seekers! 🌸🌼 If you’re on the hunt for a whimsical, fun-filled day surrounded by nature’s most colorful displays, you’re in for a treat. California’s wildflowers are like nature’s confetti, spreading joy and vibrant hues across the state. Whether you’re planning a family photo session or just a playful day out, here’s your guide to finding the best wildflower spots and the perfect time to visit them.
Best Time for Bloom:Â Late February to Early April
Kickstart your wildflower adventure in Northern California, just south of Sacramento. Pena Adobe Open Space has so many gorgeous nooks in it but our favorite is the wildflower fields that pop up on the side of the park closest to Alamo Road. Portrait and Family Photographers will adore that there is even a beautiful tree line in the horizon just behind these wildflowers.
Best Time for Bloom:Â Mid-March to Late April
Next stop, the home of California’s state flower – the poppy! Antelope Valley is a sea of orange during peak season, with rolling hills covered in brilliant poppies that seem to dance in the wind. Bring your kites, pack a picnic, and let the kids run wild among the flowers. Trust us, the golden glow of these fields is a sight to behold and perfect for capturing some golden memories. In Northern California you can also find some incredible super blooms around Mount Diablo State Park.
Best Time for Bloom:Â Mid-March to Mid-April
While the vastness of this super-bloom is extremely dependent on weather circumstances throughout the winter and early spring, Folsom lake is a gorgeous spot to find some of California’s wild Blue Lupines. There are so many spots throughout the lake side that will have these gorgeous blooms. One key to looking for lupines is to find the waters edge because these beauties thrive on water.
Best Time for Bloom:Â Early February to Late April
One of the longest lasting blooms in California these gorgeous mustard flowers are stunning! While you’ll find them on the side of the road throughout most of the state, we particularly love them in the Suisun Valley. It’s important when searching for wildflowers around private properties that you make sure to have permission to be on someone’s property. There are even some really large gorgeous fields of these right behind some vineyards and if you go and check in with their tasting room they are more than happy to let you explore through the blooms.
Best Time for Bloom:Â July
Can you imagine acre’s and acre’s of sunflowers taller than you?! In Northern California, especially in the north bay area, you’ll find massive sunflower fields. Just like our mustards these are usually on private property and it is always very important to get permission from the owner of the land to be within their property especially in their fields they use for farming. One of the best ways to get permission for a Sunflower field if you don’t know who the owner is, is to go to a local produce stand and chat with their staff. I’ve found out who the owners are of so many gorgeous spaces some of whom even worked in the produce stand I was at. Building relationships with farmers is the bread and butter of doing portrait photography in these gorgeous areas.
So, gather your family, lace up your hiking boots, and embark on a playful adventure through California’s wildflower hotspots. With vibrant colors and endless fun, it’s a perfect way to celebrate nature and create lasting memories. Happy exploring! 🌼🌸
